HCA Healthcare’s Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows Food and Nutrition Drive donates record 878,000 meals to local food banks

HCA Healthcare’s Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows Food and Nutrition Drive donates record 878,000 meals to local food banks

Year round, HCA Healthcare colleagues support local food banks, pantries and soup kitchens through volunteer service, monetary gifts and in-kind donations. This holiday season, HCA Healthcare continues our efforts to fight food insecurity with the second annual enterprise-wide Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows Food and Nutrition Drive.

During the month of November, HCA Healthcare and our colleagues provided 878,000 nutritious meals to food banks in the communities we serve by donating food or making financial contributions to help purchase perishable items such as milk, fruit and vegetables. By more than half a million meals, the amount eclipses the 370,000 provided in 2021.

Food insecurity — the lack of consistent access to enough food to have an active, healthy lifestyle — affects 1 in 10 American families. The United States Department of Agriculture reports that 13.5 million U.S. households were food insecure at some point in 2021. Nutrition experts advise that food insecurity and poor nutrition may lead to obesity – a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and many cancers.

The 878,000 nutritious meals provided to families in need included:

  • 80,722 meals donated by colleagues
  • 196,313 meals from colleague charitable donations
  • 68,333 meals from division gifts
  • 533,000 meals from $165,000 in grants provided by the HCA Healthcare Foundation to the winning facilities and divisions of a creative food sculpture contest

‘Sculpting’ healthier tomorrows for our communities

For the 2022 Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows Food and Nutrition Drive, hospitals were encouraged to get creative and build sculptures with the donated food before transporting it to their local food banks. The prize? An additional grant to a food bank in the hospital’s hometown to make an even greater impact.

Thirteen HCA Healthcare divisions submitted food sculptures this year.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center in Missouri won top honors for their holiday tree of cans titled “Rooted in Our Values.” Each can of food that made up the mosaic of the roots was topped with a note that carried an individual colleague’s motivation for giving back and providing superior, patient-centered care. One of the notes read, “I care because I love making sure patients are treated like family when they are here.” Another note read, “I care because hunger has a ripple effect, and no one should go hungry.” Colleagues’ efforts were awarded $35,000 in grants to local food banks of their choice: Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit Social Services.

We are beyond excited to support a healthy community in such an impactful way, and Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit Social Services are incredible organizations that never fail to step up and help ensure our community’s needs are met.”

Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit was created to help ensure elderly and handicapped community members have access to hot, nutritious and delicious meals, which can help them maintain a healthy diet. The organization has served over 500,000 meals since its inception and currently serves over 350 meals per week. “We are humbled, honored and appreciative of this gift from Lee’s Summit Medical Center,” said Susie Newsam, board president for Meals on Wheels of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. “The longevity of our partnership not only strengthens our organizations but benefits our community.”

HCA Healthcare’s Regional Medical Center of San Jose achieved second place and earned a $20,000 grant to a local food bank of their choice for their sculpture of California’s Golden Gate Bridge. The sculpture included details like a firetruck performing a rescue of a baby and Alcatraz made of food cans.

Boston, MA – Insufficient pollination has led to a 3-5{d2b09b03d44633acb673e8080360919f91e60962656af8ade0305d5d8b7e4889} decline of fruit, vegetable, and nut output and an approximated 427,000 extra deaths every year from lost wholesome foodstuff usage and involved ailments, like coronary heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and sure cancers, in accordance to investigation led by Harvard T.H. Chan College of Public Health and fitness. It is the initial review to quantify the human health and fitness toll of inadequate wild (animal) pollinators on human wellness.

“A critical missing piece in the biodiversity dialogue has been a deficiency of direct linkages to human health. This exploration establishes that reduction of pollinators is already impacting wellbeing on a scale with other world wide health and fitness threat elements, such as prostate most cancers or substance use disorders,” said Samuel Myers, principal analysis scientist, planetary health, Section of Environmental Health and fitness and senior writer of the research.

Rising human stress on organic programs is resulting in alarming losses in biodiversity, the matter of the COP 15 UN Biodiversity Meeting at this time having spot in Montreal. This consists of 1-2{d2b09b03d44633acb673e8080360919f91e60962656af8ade0305d5d8b7e4889} annual declines of insect populations, leading some to warn of an impending “insect apocalypse” in the coming many years. Essential among insect species are pollinators, which improve yields of 3-fourths of crop versions and are critical to growing balanced foods like fruits, greens, and nuts.  Improvements in land-use, use of unsafe pesticides, and advancing local climate transform threaten wild pollinators, imperiling human provide of healthier foods.

The scientists applied a design framework, which incorporated empirical evidence from a community of hundreds of experimental farms across Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin The united states, that appeared at “pollinator generate gaps” for the most significant pollinator-dependent crops, to display how a great deal crop reduction was due to insufficient pollination. They then used a world possibility-ailment design to estimate the health impacts the changes in pollination could have on nutritional dangers and mortality by country. Moreover, they calculated the loss of financial value from shed pollination in a few circumstance study nations.

The final results confirmed that lost food items creation was concentrated in lessen-profits nations but that the wellness burden was larger in middle- and bigger-money countries, where by costs of non-communicable conditions are increased. The geographic distribution was fairly unconventional in that normally the health and fitness effects from world environmental change are centered among the the poorest populations in locations these types of as South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Right here, middle-money countries with large populations—China, India, Indonesia, and Russia—suffered the biggest load.

The examination also showed that decreased-income countries misplaced sizeable agricultural revenue thanks to insufficient pollination and lessen yields, probably 10-30{d2b09b03d44633acb673e8080360919f91e60962656af8ade0305d5d8b7e4889} of overall agricultural price.

“The outcomes may possibly feel surprising, but they replicate the complicated dynamics of aspects guiding food items techniques and human populations close to the world. Only with this kind of interdisciplinary modeling can we get a much better repair on the magnitude and influence of the trouble,” explained co-creator Timothy Sulser, senior scientist, Global Food items Plan Investigate Institute.

Approaches to protect wild pollinators are not just an environmental concern, but a well being and financial just one as well. “This examine shows that doing also little to assist pollinators does not just hurt character, but human overall health as perfectly,” stated lead author Matthew Smith, analysis scientist, Division of Environmental Health and fitness.
