12 Amazon Alexa Tips and Hacks for the Kitchen

12 Amazon Alexa Tips and Hacks for the Kitchen

This story is part of Home Tips, CNET’s collection of practical advice for getting the most out of your home, inside and out.

Whether you’re a cooking novice or seasoned chef, cooking can be daunting, especially when hosting or cooking for your family. But Amazon’s trusty voice assistant Alexa can lend a helping hand.

From creating shopping lists and finding recipes to starting your oven and setting the mood, Alexa can be absolutely essential in your kitchen. Here’s my favorite 12 Alexa features to use while cooking, baking, meal prepping and more. (For more Amazon Echo tips, check out which Alexa settings you should change ASAP, the five useful Echo features you should try today and the newest Alexa commands.)

1. Maintain a grocery list with Alexa

Out of the box, Alexa can help you maintain lists for shopping and to-dos. All you have to do is tell Alexa what you want to add and specify which list you want to add it to.

CNET Home Tips logo

For example, you can say “Alexa, add eggs.” Since eggs is a noun, Alexa understands that it’s an item you would like to add to your shopping list. You can also say “Alexa, add bread to my shopping list,” or, “Alexa, add an item to my shopping list.” For the latter, Alexa will ask what you want to add and your response will be added as the next line item on your list.

To check this list, open the Alexa app on iOS or Android or go to alexa.amazon.com and click Lists. If you would like to sync your additions with one of the supported services — Any.do, AnyList, Cozi Lists, Picniic or Todoist — connect your accounts in the Alexa app. For automatically copying your list to iOS Reminders, Evernote or another note-taking service, use IFTTT to create an Applet that will do one-way sync.

2. Convert units with Alexa

When cooking, you may find yourself needing to convert units of measurement, such as from milliliters to cups. Alexa is capable of doing this out of the box. Just say, “Alexa, convert 2 cups to fluid ounces,” or, “Alexa, how many cups are in a gallon?”

You can also ask how much a volumetric measurement of an ingredient weighs. For instance, “Alexa, how much does a cup of flour weigh?”

3. Keep multiple timers with Alexa

Alexa can put your old egg timer to shame. Just say, “Alexa, start a timer for 5 minutes.” After 5 minutes passes, the speaker will chime until you tell it to stop. You can check on how much time is left simply by asking.

Even better, you can have multiple Alexa timers running simultaneously and give each one a name. Just say something like, “Alexa, start a pizza timer for 10 minutes.”

Alexa can help you maintain lists for shopping, build to-do lists and set timers.

Amazon

4. Make coffee with Alexa

You can also use an Alexa command to start up a coffee maker. All you need is a Mr. Coffee 10-Cup Smart Optimal Brew — or a simple drip coffee maker, plus a smart switch.

Next, create an IFTTT Applet that will turn on the smart switch (or the Smart Optimal Brew coffee maker) with a trigger phrase, and remember to add coffee grounds and water the night before you want to use it. Then, in the morning, say the trigger phrase and watch the magic happen.

The Behmor Connected Coffee Brewer was recently integrated with Alexa, as well, making it possible to start brewing your coffee with your voice without IFTTT.

5. Control smart cookers with Alexa

Alexa can also control smaller appliances and cooking devices, such as connected sous vide precision cookers or slow cookers.

Both the Anova and Joule precision cookers have Alexa skills with similar functionality. Anova Culinary and Joule: Sous Vide by ChefSteps let you set the temperature or ask for help cooking specific types of food to the correct temperature, as well as check in on the status of the cook.

While Alexa supports WeMo devices, you won’t find native support for the Crock-Pot Smart Slow Cooker with WeMo. Instead, you’ll need to rely on IFTTT to pair the WeMo slow cooker to Alexa.

6. Control large appliances with Alexa

Alexa now works with many kitchen appliances, such as ovens and refrigerators. Specifically, GE’s Geneva skill lets you preheat your oven with your voice or begin brewing coffee with one of its refrigerators with a built-in Keurig.

LG has also put Alexa directly into its Smart InstaView door-in-door refrigerator.

Even without direct support, if you own one of the handful of full-size smart appliances integrated with IFTTT, you can control your oven, dishwasher, refrigerator or slow cooker with Alexa. You will just need to create some Applets with these channels using Alexa as the trigger channel to turn your kitchen into a voice-controlled heaven.

7. Ask Alexa for recipe ideas

If you ask Alexa for recipe ideas, it isn’t exactly helpful. However, if you search for “recipe” in the Skills section of the Alexa app or alexa.amazon.com, there’s no shortage of options.

One skill worth checking out is Allrecipes. Ask for the recipe of the day, a recipe based on ingredients you have on hand, how long you have or your preferred cooking method. You can even have recipes sent to your phone if you provide your mobile number or save a recipe to your favorites in Allrecipes by linking your account in the Alexa app. Say something like, “Alexa, ask Allrecipes what can I make with chicken and broccoli,” or, “Alexa, ask Allrecipes for a slow cooker recipe for pulled pork.”

Nestlé also has a recipe skill called GoodNes. You can ask GoodNes to give you recipes for a specific meal, such as dessert or breakfast, email a recipe to you (if you connect your account) and ask which utensils will be needed for the recipe. GoodNes comes with a visual guide that will run in Safari or Chrome on a laptop or iPad. With the visual guide setup and after finding a recipe, you can say things like, “Show me the ingredients,” to view them in the browser.

Here are some other recipe skills worth checking out:

8. Ask Alexa for cooking times

Not sure how long you should cook that 20-pound turkey? The Epicurious Smart Kitchen Timer skill can help. But it can be used for more than that Thanksgiving turkey. This skill can give cooking information on various types of steak, chicken, pork, vegetables and seafood. Just enable the skill, then say, “Alexa, ask Epicurious how long it takes to cook squash.”

9. Ask Alexa for calorie counts

If you’re not sure how many calories a food has, just ask Alexa. It may not always have an answer, but it’s a great place to start. For example, try saying, “Alexa, how many calories are there in Greek yogurt?”

It can provide info on carbohydrates, as well, but only for certain items. It depends on how widely available the nutritional information for a product is — and it helps if the food is something generic, such as steak or broccoli.

10. Ask Alexa to pair wines with food

If you’re unsure which wine best pairs with a certain dish, you can ask Alexa. Try either the Wine Buddy or MySomm skill.

Begin by asking which wine pairs with a certain food item, like halibut or steak. Say, “Alexa, ask Wine Buddy what I should pair with salmon,” or, “Alexa, ask Wine Gal to recommend a wine for prime rib.”

These skills aren’t perfect. Thanks to limited databases, they can’t always pair your wines with specific dishes. Wine Buddy couldn’t tell me which wine pairs with chicken marsala, for example, but if you keep the requests fairly basic, you can get some basic answers.

11. Ask Alexa for cocktail recipe ideas

If you have guests coming over for drinks, but you’re not sure where to begin, just say, “Alexa, open Easy Cocktail.” Then, to use Easy Cocktail, say, “Alexa, ask Easy Cocktail how I can make an Old Fashioned.” First, Alexa will list off the ingredients, then it will tell you the steps of making the drink.

If you’ve got a specific liquor in mind, you can ask The Bartender for cocktail recommendations instead.

12. Listening to music or the news with Alexa

Don’t forget to crank up the volume while you cook. While you may not be able to binge Netflix while you cook, it’s one of the best times to catch up on your favorite podcasts. You can also stream music or play your Flash Briefing to hear the latest news.

Robert Irvine Talks His Top Cooking Tips And Follows Up To Restaurant: Impossible

Robert Irvine Talks His Top Cooking Tips And Follows Up To Restaurant: Impossible

I am likely to revert to chatting about seafood dishes in typical. What is your favorite way to use canned seafood?

I don’t seriously use canned seafood ever. I use it for myself for canned tuna when I am on the road for my very own meals, but I you should not use cans at any time.

I saw you have a excellent volume of whitefish recipes. If you might be seeking to maintain expenses down, what are your ideas on making use of fish like tilapia?

Tilapia is high-quality, but remember, tilapia is a base fish. It truly is a muddy, gritty variety of fish. If you might be going to do that, you have to impart flavor since you will find not a great deal taste. It can be not like sea bass. I would use tilapia without the pores and skin, make a bread crumb, and a challenging-boiled egg, chop it up, [add] onion, insert a minimal little bit of butter to it and fresh parsley or chives, and then roll it up like a paupiette. Prepare dinner it in the oven and use some form of sauce around the top rated of it.

That seems fantastic. You might be also identified for your crab cake dish. I discovered that you used ginger root juice. How does ginger root juice increase or increase the taste of crab cakes?

It gives warmth to it, but it also provides all the other components jointly. The juice of ginger is effective. If you glance at historic occasions, it was a medicinal drink — same with chocolate. Chocolate, cacao, made use of to be a consume. It was not challenging chocolate.

It was only the Swiss and Nestlé that took the consume of chocolate, the cacao with water, included sugar and milk, and that is how chocolate was born. I really feel the exact way with ginger. I make a ginger vodka — 100 proof — and the flavor’s great. It provides all the flavors together like salt does.

You have a spirits manufacturer [Irvine’s Spirits] as effectively. What would you say is the secret to a perfect martini?

The bartender. You often have to begin with fantastic liquor, but each and every bartender has a very little twist. Appear, the liquor is significant, but when you put olives and you put every thing else in there, it modifications the liquor profile. It truly is a bartender that is the vital.

Do you have any other impending assignments or anything else interesting coming up?

We have a new HGTV pilot coming up, “Restaurant: Unattainable” is [coming] back, four new reveals … You will find a good deal coming up this 12 months.

Save money with The Batch Lady’s recipes and meal prep tips

Save money with The Batch Lady’s recipes and meal prep tips

Meal prepping is the gold standard of saving money, reducing waste and keeping healthy – but have you ever made 10 meals in an hour?

It might seem like an impossible feat, but it’s a regular event for Suzanne Mulholland, AKA The Batch Lady (@thebatchlady) – and the key to success is all about making a plan.

For an example of how she does it, Mulholland, who is based on the Scottish borders, starts with a meal such as fajitas. “In the pot is mince and onions, and everything else for fajitas,” she says – and this also works as a base for two other dishes: chilli and spaghetti Bolognese.

“While the meat’s browning, I make two family portions of burgers and meatballs, which I freeze raw. Then I divide up my pot, to make two portions of the other three recipes.”

You’ve then got 10 portions of five different meals for your freezer.

This way of cooking comes naturally to Mulholland, 47, who used to work as a time-management expert. She took all the tools from her previous job and applied them to cooking when she had children. After sharing recipes on YouTube and Instagram, The Batch Lady was born (she currently has around 27.7K subscribers and 157K followers on each platform respectively).

Batch cooking doesn’t have to be an endless parade of stews, either – the recipes in Mulholland’s new book, The Batch Lady: Cooking On A Budget, are vibrant and interesting. “We’ve got churros, dirty fries, calzones, cheesecakes, koftas and ramen – all really good stuff,” she says.

She might now be on her fourth cookbook, but Mulholland doesn’t claim to have perfected everything. When asked if she’s ever had a disaster in the kitchen, she laughs: “I had one last night! I’m always trying out new recipes… So, I was doing a Christmas dinner for a reel, and it worked perfectly. But I wondered if I could make a Christmas pasta bake… “It was not nice. Don’t chop up your Christmas dinner and leftovers and make it into a pasta bake, because it really wasn’t good.” You can’t deny the benefits of batch cooking, though – particularly in a cost-of-living crisis.

“My whole ethos is, you don’t need to cook every single night, you don’t need to cook when you want to eat – you can cook whenever you want to,” Mulholland says. And this could help save money on takeaways or last-minute trips to the supermarket, too.

If you want to save time and cash by batch cooking, here’s how to get into it…

Start small

“I always say start small,” Mulholland advises. “All you need to do is choose two meals a week that you eat regularly, and find a recipe you can freeze.

“Every time you make it, double it up – have one that night, put one in the freezer. That means, another night, you won’t need to cook, because you’ve got a meal in the freezer.” She suggests this type of cooking is “addictive” – once you’ve started, you’ll want to do it more and more.

Plan ahead

“You don’t have to plan every meal, planning just one extra meal will save you money,” she says.

“These days, we all shop back to front – we arrive at the supermarket, then we think, ‘Right, what do I want to eat? What do I want to buy?’ – and of course, supermarkets are set up for you to pick items they’re going to make the most money on.

“So, before doing your food shop, decide what you want to eat, then see what you’ve already got in. This will stop you wasting food and save you money.”

Get organised

Unsurprisingly for a time-management expert, Mulholland has plenty of handy tips for making batch cooking as quick and easy as possible.

“When you’re going to batch cook, it’s good to be organised – lay out all your ingredients and have everything else you need ready,” she advises. “It’s also worth having an empty dishwasher, or a sink full of hot, soapy water.” This way, when you’ve finished cooking, you’re not then faced with “a huge kitchen to clean up” – potentially putting you off for life.

19 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 x 154g packet Oreos

  • 60g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing

  • 200g chocolate digestive biscuits

  • 80g smooth peanut butter, plus a little extra to drizzle over the top

Transfer to the fridge to firm up while you prepare the topping.

  4. Remove the base from the fridge and pour over the ice cream mixture, levelling it out in an even layer. Dot a little more peanut butter over the surface, then use a knife or skewer to ripple through the ice cream.

  5. Crush the remaining Oreos and sprinkle over the top, then cover the ice cream cake with clingfilm and transfer to the freezer for at least three hours to set.

  6. If you’re serving now… Once the ice cream cake has fully set, remove from the freezer and leave to thaw slightly for around 10 minutes. Run a knife around the inside edge of the tin, then open the springform tin, cut the cake into wedges and serve.

  7. Or, simply leave the cake in the freezer for up to three months. Then remove the cake from the freezer and leave to thaw slightly for around 10 minutes. Run a knife around the inside edge of the tin, then open the springform tin, cut the cake into wedges and serve.

My 7 Favorite Cooking Tips From Cuisines Around The World

My 7 Favorite Cooking Tips From Cuisines Around The World

Finding out about a region or region’s tradition is 1 of my most important objectives as a traveler. Meals is an vital window into the tradition, so when I journey, I commonly just take cooking courses to discover far more about my destination’s regional way of lifestyle.

Even when I’m being at dwelling, I locate occasions to get cooking courses from chefs who give courses on the cuisine of their indigenous land. These classes provide prospects to develop my horizons in advance of I go and approach what I may want to expertise when I’m in the country or region.

Listed here are seven of my preferred cooking guidelines from cuisines throughout the world that I use regularly. If you don’t travel to these locations but want to take pleasure in their food items, you are going to uncover these recommendations helpful.

Some guidelines mentioned in this report were being acquired as aspect of hosted visits, though many others I took at my have cost.

1. Just take Security Safeguards When Performing With Chiles

Southwestern, Mexican, Or Asian Cuisines

I mention this tip 1st, as it not too long ago slipped my head, and I experienced the implications. Cooks use chiles in quite a few cuisines about the entire world, and I don’t forget mastering this suggestion at the Santa Fe University of Cooking, where chiles are a regional preferred in cooking in the southwest United States. Whilst I enjoyed the roasted green chile-sweet corn chowder built with Hatch green chiles at La Plazuela Cafe in La Fonda on the Plaza, I ate it practically every day through my excursion. This dish spurred me to learn more about cooking with various community chiles.

Chiles are very hot simply because a compound referred to as capsaicin is in the membranes that consist of the seeds. Capsaicin is odorless and colorless but can pack a significant punch in your mouth and other sensitive parts, like your eyes. So you are going to want to stay clear of touching your eyes after functioning with chiles. The very best way to safeguard towards the burn is to don plastic gloves, watchful not to inadvertently touch your eyes or other sensitive areas. Plastic bags can function as a substitute if you really do not have gloves. Even right after working with gloves, clean your arms with cleaning soap to stay away from any difficulties.

2. Developing A Darkish Roux Usually takes Endurance

Cajun And Creole Delicacies

Roux is a mixture of fats (oil or butter) and flour, using on a range of shades, from white, blond, brown, and darkish brown. Each colour is ideal for a certain sort of dish. For example, you are going to find light-weight roux in sauces like béchamel. A dark roux is the foundation of fantastic gumbo but it usually takes tolerance.

When I was having a cooking course at the New Orleans Faculty of Cooking, one of the dishes we developed was gumbo, and the dark roux appeared to consider permanently. It might have only been about 15 to 20 minutes, but standing and constantly stirring so it did not burn off seemed like eternally.

Eventually, I would ask if it was ready, and the instructor would say, “No, preserve likely.” Then, finally, it reached the deep, flavorful brown important to a tasty gumbo.

From working experience, to have a prosperous dark roux, you need to consider the warmth small and sluggish so that it does not burn off.

Gumbo in New Orleans

3. Use The Holy Trinity

Cajun And Creole Delicacies

An additional suggestion I acquired at the New Orleans Faculty of Cooking was employing the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is a traditional mirepoix of carrots, onions, and celery. But in Cajun cooking, they adjust points up a bit and use environmentally friendly bell peppers instead of carrots as the vegetables in gumbo. This is critical simply because making use of carrots relatively than inexperienced bell peppers will change the dish’s taste, and you won’t have the identical flavor as the dish you seasoned in New Orleans. Also, dice the veggies in a uniform measurement so they will cook dinner evenly in the exact volume of time.

4. Caramelization Equals Taste

Steakhouse Cuisine

I was executing some menu planning for a little evening meal bash, and the subject of steak arrived up. My teen daughter encouraged against it, declaring, “Steak is not your greatest dish.” From then, I was identified to find out to prepare dinner a terrific steak. I attended a webinar with a few Omaha cooks and acquired some techniques to up my game.

Initial, up to 12 hours before cooking, time the steak with a liberal volume of fresh ground black pepper and salt to impart the most flavor. Then, enable the meat stand at area temperature for nearly two several hours prior to searing it.

Nova Scotia’s Seafood Delicacies

February is peak lobster season together Nova Scotia’s South Shore. From Barrington (Canada’s Lobster Cash) to Peggy’s Cove, they celebrate these luxurious crustaceans. I used a week discovering Nova Scotia for the duration of their South Shore Lobster Crawl. When I frequented, the Kilted Chef, Alain Bossé, done a just one-hour cooking demonstration titled “Lobster 101.” I uncovered quite a few guidelines for cooking lobster throughout this session. 1 of the most crucial recommendations was that you must get rid of the rubber bands from the lobster claws prior to putting the lobster in the pot. If you don’t clear away them, the rubber imparts a rubbery taste to the lobster.

To do this devoid of the claws pinching your hand, use just one hand to cross the lobster claws, use your other hand to clear away the elastic bands, then place the lobster headfirst into the boiling h2o — cook the lobster for 12 to 15 minutes.

7. Include Salt But Not Oil To Pasta Drinking water

Italian Delicacies

For the duration of a cooking class at The Neighborhood Epicurean in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we learned to insert salt to the drinking water to taste like the ocean, but not oil. Adding oil to the water prevents the sauce from sticking to the pasta.

Then remove the pasta from the pot applying a slotted spoon alternatively than draining it, or you’ll shed the coveted pasta water down the drain. I’ve done this on much more than just one occasion, leaving me devoid of the starchy addition to my sauce. Instead, reserving the salty pasta water provides flavor to the dish and permits you to modify the sauce’s consistency.
