In my kitchen area, there is a drawer full of kitchen devices that features my can opener, milk frother, avocado slicer, ice product scooper, rolling pin, and measuring cups. It is not the most annoying drawer to sift by means of, (that would be my hair equipment in the toilet), but to be truthful, it could be a whole lot additional organized. I have not discovered a kitchen area drawer organizer to clear up that difficulty however, but I have identified a tool to hold me about in the meantime. BLACK+DECKER launched their multipurpose Kitchen area Wand previous 12 months, and I have experienced my eye on it for months. It is a wonder gadget for the kitchen that can just take on several responsibilities from foodstuff prep to entertaining — all with the exact handle. If that could aid me lower down my kitchen area “junk” drawer, it would be a miracle. So, when I at last acquired the prospect to consider it first-hand, it was an opportunity I could not go up.
I hadn’t seen the Kitchen area Wand in its packaging prior to I obtained it, so I was stunned to obtain that it arrived packed into two cases that seem like toolkits. The wand foundation and all of its attachments just about every have their personal committed house for storage, which is a actually sensible plan to maintain them from building a lot more muddle in the kitchen. It will come with a milk frother, salt and pepper grinder, can opener, whisk, immersion blender, and corkscrew. In addition to the gadget attachments, the Wand also arrives with a mixing cup and charging dock for the base that can be saved on the counter. Even so, if you require to conserve place, you can depart the foundation in the storage situation and cost it though it’s saved, way too. Lights on the top of the Wand allow you know how full the charge is at any time of the working day, so I under no circumstances have to worry about picking it up and not being equipped to ability it up.
I know it seems strange in idea to use the similar manage for various devices that accomplish wildly various capabilities, but it took utilizing the Kitchen Wand only after to see just how easy it is. The product has a number of speeds so the good options can be used depending on what you have to have it to do, and even has safety characteristics in location to ensure that you use it with intention. To work it, you have to push the electric power button on the entrance and again of the wand for it to work.
So much, I have utilized the Kitchen Wand’s can opener the most out of all the other attachments. I imagined it would be a inconvenience to have to unpack the attachment from the storage case just about every time I want to use it, but now I reach for the Wand before I even think about pulling out my previous-school can opener. Though I can simply just get the latter from a drawer, I in fact open up cans quicker with the Kitchen area Wand than carrying out it only by hand. I can preserve the other attachments conveniently tucked away in my pantry right up until I’m completely ready to use them, and the storage bins can be stacked or linked to take up less place. A different perk of possessing the bins is that they’re uncomplicated to transportation. When my family receives collectively for massive dinners, I’m usually asked to appear early to aid with making ready a aspect or dessert, and now I can carry my possess meals prep tools with me as an alternative of ready for a whisk to be out there.
The Kitchen Wand is now on sale, but even if it was not, it’s entirely worthy of the price tag. If I was to get every of these devices separately, it would charge roughly the exact same amount or more and not save practically as considerably storage room. I really do not have a significant kitchen, so the much more room and revenue I can help you save, the greater. I just cannot hold out to see all the means I can use this ingenious gadget in excess of the program of the year, specifically when I get to exhibit it off the next time I host the family supper.
Smart kitchen appliances including ovens, multicookers and fridges are becoming more and more common, but there is still extraordinary innovation happening in the category. 2023 looks to be a big year for integrated smart tools that will help us store groceries, prep ingredients and, of course, cook.
Always a leader in smart home tech, LG released an electrifying new fridge with color-changing panels to match your mood, along with a few more practical features, at CES in Las Vegas last week. Not to be outdone, GE Profile dropped a brilliant smart stand mixer with updates to the baker’s top companion that have us rethinking KitchenAid’s decades-long dominance in the category.

Other smart kitchen tools you can expect to see in 2023? Two connected, smart cutting boards made their first appearance at the early January consumer tech showcase. And Kaltech, a Japanese water and air purification outfit unveiled an intriguing $315 produce and bread storage box that uses photocatalysis to slow mold and spoilage. Smart ovens continue to see refinement and increased capability but hefty prices keep them out of reach for most people.
Below are a few of the smart kitchen trends we’ll be on the lookout for in 2023.
GE
GE Profile Smart Mixer
Stand mixers with serious smarts
KitchenAid has had the market cornered on stand mixers, but GE Profile’s latest entry into the category has raised more than a few eyebrows. The smart mixer features a built-in scale for nailing recipe measurements. It also has Auto-Sense technology which helps the machine determine when something is finished mixing or needs more oomph, especially when working through a guided recipe.
Speaking of guided recipes, the GE Profile syncs up with the app to help you navigate dozens of recipes from measuring the ingredients all the way through to the mixing part. CNET’s Jessica Dolcourt got to try it and it just might be her favorite thing from all of CES 2023.

LG
LG’s MoodUp
Fridges get even more connected
When 2023 began just days ago, I didn’t know I’d need a fridge that changes colors with the tap of a button and syncs with my music — but here we are. Yes, LG’s MoodUp fridge is flashy, and most of its features are completely superfluous, but not all of them.
Consider Instaview knock-to-view technology, which is not totally new but makes it so one of the front fridge-side panels becomes transparent when you nudge it, letting you see what’s inside without opening. Oh, and the fridge can sense you coming in the middle of the night, and offers some gentle light via one of the panels so you don’t step in the dog’s water while sneaking 2 a.m. bites of cheesecake.
This one will be pricey but, honestly, we’re starting to see the appeal. Read more about the LG MoodUp here.
Samsung
Samsung’s AI Wall Oven
The robots are cooking!
Samsung’s new AI Wall Oven, introduced at CES 2023, is equipped with an internal camera and technology that lets you send a view of the inside of your oven straight to social media. The AI Pro Cooking algorithm can recognize up to 80 dishes and recommend an appropriate temperature, time and cooking mode, then send notifications to help prevent your food from burning.

Kaltech
Kaltech Fresh Food Keeper
Can a little science solve stale bread?
Keeping nonrefrigerated fresh food from getting stale and growing mold has always been a problem, and the kitchen innovators at Japan’s Kaltech think they’ve unlocked an answer. The tech-forward breadbox is electric-powered and uses photocatalysis, a chemical procedure sometimes used in the decontamination of water, to keep bread and produce fresh for longer.
We have yet to test the $315 Fresh Food Keeper, which naturally has to be done over a period of a few days, but we’re on it and will report back with findings soon.
Brava
Brava Glass
Smart ovens see refinement but not price drops
We like the Brava smart oven, but its eye-popping price makes it hard to recommend. In fact, the smart oven category at large remains far too expensive for most people to justify pulling the trigger — this latest drop from Brava is no exception.
The new $2,000 Brava Glass, which the company unveiled at CES, has all the trappings of the original $1,300 model, including the ability to air-fry, roast, bake, broil, toast, reheat, slow-cook and warm, with the addition of a glass front door so you can see the food as it cooks. Previously, food sizzling away in the Brava could only be viewed via your phone by way of a camera housed inside the cooking chamber.

Blok
Smart Cutting Boards
A new smart kitchen category makes its debut
Two smart cutting boards made their CES debuts this year, adding to a long list of kitchen tools that have been smartified.
The Blok is a snazzy and expensive walnut board with a detachable screen meant to beam in live or recorded cooking videos so you can work through dishes without having to look up at a tablet. It’s awfully nice to look at, but we’re not sure it’s worth the $799 upfront cost, plus a $39 monthly subscription.
A more practical version is the Versaware Smart Cutting Board. We don’t have pricing info yet, but we sure hope it will be less than the Blok. This gadget-y cutting board features a smaller, more manageable screen that is fixed to the bottom corner and walks you through recipes, providing useful information about technique, calories and nutrition.

The pandemic reignited a lot of people’s love for cooking. And it was easy to maintain our sourdough starters and take on days-long culinary projects as our social calendars sat empty and we worked from home. While the love for cooking has remained, commuting, travel and social engagements have returned, meaning we have less time and energy to whip up that homemade meal — and tackle the cleanup that comes with it — than we did two years ago.
As someone who cooks for a living, Melissa Clark feels our pain, which is why she was inspired to write Dinner in One: Exceptional & Easy One-Pan Meals. Each recipe in the book can be made in less than one hour, and they’ve been streamlined to require only one pan, pot or skillet during the cooking process. “[During the pandemic], I went from cooking dinner four or five times a week to cooking three meals a day, every day,” Clark says. “The dishes piled up, and I started to resent them. So cooking became a puzzle — how to make the most delicious food to sooth and satisfy, but how not to make myself crazy with dishes at the end of the meal.”
I myself have always loved cooking, but it became the daily habit I wanted it to be during the pandemic. Exchanging recipes with family and friends became a weekly ritual to keep things exciting and fresh. One particular friend told me I had to read Clark’s Dinner in Frenchand sent me a copy. That’s when I became a devotee to Clark’s recipes, cooking through her ode to France and as many of her NYT dishes as humanly possible. And after making an abundance of her meals, I can say that her recipes are about as foolproof and delicious as they come.
Dinner in One has tons of options for modification, whether you want to substitute a different ingredient or even make certain recipes vegan. Many even have a note on how to “Veg It Up,” which gives you a chance to pack the dish with vegetables. “Baby spinach!,” Clark said when asked about her personal favorite way to add more veggies. “I add it everywhere, pre-washed, straight from the box into the soup-stew-chili pot. And I’ll roast any veggie that will let me. Having a side of roasted veggies goes with everything, especially if you’re turning the oven on anyway — might as well stick a pan of cut-up, oiled vegetables in there, too.”
Clark is an expert in one-pot cooking, so we asked her about the other multi-purpose kitchen tools she can’t live without.
Microplane
Microplane
“A microplane for garlic, ginger and citrus zest is such a great way to add flavor quickly, and then you can toss it into the dishwasher.”
“I also love a deep, 10-inch sauté pan with a cover, which I can use for sautéing and also for making pasta sauces (and pastas!), stews, braises and even small batches of soup. The high sides make it more practical and multifunctional than a slope-sided skillet.”
“Once you start weighing things instead of measuring, your life gets easier and your dish load gets lighter. You don’t need cup measures for baking anymore, just add ingredients directly to the bowl. It’s so much more exact and leaves you a lot less to clean up.”
If you’re looking for a little dinner inspiration tonight, this roasted tuna recipe from Melissa Clark’s Dinner in One is a quick, delicious meal that only requires the work of your Dutch oven.
Clarkson Potter
Roasted Tuna with Brown Butter Corn, Tomatoes and Chile
Ingredients
1½ lbs. tuna, cut into steaks about 1-inch thick
½ tsp. kosher salt, plus more as needed
Freshly ground black pepper
2 garlic cloves, minced or finely grated
1 tsp. ancho chile powder (or substitute another chile powder)
4 Tbsp. (½ stick) unsalted butter
5 scallions, thinly sliced (white and green parts separated)
2 jalapeños, seeded and diced
2 cups corn kernels, fresh (from about 2 ears) or frozen and thawed
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
Lime wedges, for serving
Flaky sea salt, for serving
Directions
Heat the oven to 325ºF. Season the tuna all over with kosher salt and black pepper. In a small bowl, combine the garlic and chile powder. Rub the mixture on the tuna and set aside while prepping the other ingredients.
In a 5- or 6-quart Dutch oven, melt the butter over medium heat. Cook, swirling occasionally, until the foam subsides, the milk solids turn golden brown, and it smells nutty and toasty, 2 to 4 minutes. (Watch carefully to see that it doesn’t burn.)
Stir in the scallion whites and jalapeños and cook until tender and golden, 2 minutes. Add the corn, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned, 7 minutes. Stir in the tomatoes, the ½ teaspoon kosher salt and a grind or two of black pepper. Nestle the tuna steaks into the pot and drizzle with the oil. Cover and bake until the vegetables are tender and the tuna is cooked to the desired doneness, 10 to 13 minutes for rare, 15 to 20 minutes for medium.
Taste the corn and add more kosher salt and a squeeze of lime, if needed. Serve topped with the scallion greens and flaky sea salt and the lime wedges on the side.
SWAP IT OUT: Thick salmon filets will work well here in place of the tuna.
VEG IT UP: You can add tender greens to the corn and tomatoes. Before serving, remove the tuna steaks from the pot and tent with foil to keep them warm. Add 4 to 5 ounces (4 to 5 cups) of baby greens and stir over low heat until they wilt.
For individuals of us who adore to prepare dinner, a trip to a pretentious kitchen area store like Williams-Sonoma can be a fun way to shell out an afternoon — and an high-priced a person. There is something indulgent about foolish minimal cooking gadgets like strawberry hullers or asparagus steamers. But at the conclusion of the day, if you shell out a good deal of time in the kitchen, you recognize that these items for the most section are just a waste of revenue and kitchen area area. More frequently than not, these gimmicky devices are cheaply manufactured or provide a person incredibly obscure goal, and then we simply cannot find the damned factor when it will come time to in fact use it. This should not be how we cook. It is discouraging, cluttered, and pricey.
After we allow for ourselves to enable go of the thought that we have to have the latest quirky gizmo, we can embrace the usefulness of higher-high quality, multi-useful resources that will last for many years in our kitchens.
Kitchen area resources and devices needn’t be ordered from a superior-stop retailer or snooty culinary web page. Ah, the signature orange Household Depot bucket. This trusty pail is how I brine my Thanksgiving turkey each one year (really don’t fear, that’s its only intent). No have to have for extravagant brining baggage or expensive, bulky coolers. This bucket gets the task accomplished completely and will healthy into most refrigerators with a few shelf changes.
You could see a woodworking device, but I see a microplane that’s in it for the lengthy haul. Zest citrus, grate fresh nutmeg, or shave some chocolate or coconut flakes onto your dessert to give it a distinctive contact. This small software is meant to shave wood and is as a result sturdier and longer-lasting than a flimsy kitchen model.
And though these pliers may possibly not fit the lobster or crab supper aesthetic you are almost certainly likely for, they are good for cracking open up individuals pesky shells. It’s possible just do that aspect powering the scenes and not at the evening meal table.
When I was just commencing to appreciate cooking, another person in my loved ones stuffed my stocking just one Xmas with some alternatively extravagantly pink, horribly bejeweled “onion goggles.” They had been absurd. But you know what? They worked. Onions have tear-inducing enzymes that are introduced when the onion is slice, and all that crying can be a genuine suffering when all you are hoping to do is make on your own some lunch.
Toss on a pair of these poor boys to prevent the fumes from finding into individuals newborn blues. They’ll get the job done just as nicely as the sparkly pink variation, no emasculation essential.
Wood is the start off of any good challenge, sure, but have you ever regarded as creating your have cutting board? Or generating several and providing them as housewarming or marriage ceremony presents? If you have a number of fundamental woodworking and crafting abilities, they can be tremendous uncomplicated to make. Dowels
Lindsay Parrill/The Guide
Wooden dowels have several works by using in the kitchen, and their varying measurements make for a extended checklist of choices. If you are into baking, the thinner variations make excellent cake dowels to hold your cake levels with each other. The thicker dowels can make the most major-duty, most economical rolling pins you’ve at any time experienced. Use them for rolling out doughs, breaking up nuts, and chasing off negative guys.
You say lavatory tile, I say beautiful cheese boards. For a little fraction of what you’d pay back for the correct same matter labeled “cheese board,” you can simply use a piece of tile, and no 1 will be the wiser. And certainly, you can ordinarily purchase solitary tiles. If you are on the lookout for a more compact piece, you might even be capable to get one totally free if you question properly. People like to take these household to see how the tile will match their décor, so the more generous workers will from time to time enable you to choose a person or two totally free of cost.
From trussing poultry to holding herb bundles with each other, cooking twine is a need to in each individual kitchen area. Even though you can most certainly order this merchandise at fancy kitchen area stores, you’ll conclude up paying out about 2 times as much for each property. Ideal to purchase in bulk listed here.
There aren’t a lot of strategies you can’t use a superior pair of trusty shears in the kitchen. Use them for everything from chopping herbs to breaking down poultry to opening meals packages. Just like so numerous of the other goods on our listing, it is best to go with the components retail outlet edition fairly than the kitchen edition. Of course you can get shears that are produced exclusively for the kitchen, but they are possible to be considerably much less burly than some thing like this. If they are much more of a hefty-obligation model, you can hope to fork out major greenback. In this circumstance, just go with the toolbox variation.
Let us be sincere — we’re not constantly the most flawless cooks in the kitchen area. Often matters burn. It occurs. But cleansing that burnt-on goo from sheet pans isn’t all that bad when you use a single of these guys to do the tricky get the job done for you. Basically soap, soak, and scrape your baked-on troubles absent.
Joint knives are also the perfect device for making a person of today’s trendier treats: Rolled ice product. If you’d like to try this at household, simply unfold your ice cream on an anti-griddle and use this trusty tool to shape your chilly rolls.
A single of my favorite utilizes for an infrared thermometer in the kitchen is not to check food stuff temperature itself (while that is great, far too!) but to verify cooking surfaces. I have a fairly outdated-faculty grill that doesn’t have a constructed-in thermometer, so this very little gadget assists me get the temperature right just about every time. It is also best for checking the temperature of oil for frying. No require for messy, bulky types that sit in the pot and get in the way.
The manliest oven mitts on the sector, welding gloves can face up to temperatures of up to 2,000 levels Fahrenheit. So whether or not you are finding a little something off the warm grill, out of the oven, or you know, the area of the sunlight, you should really be great. While they don’t give a lot of finesse with your hand movements, they are good for grabbing a sizzling skillet from the coals — then goin’ out back again and branding cattle or something.
