Simple breakfast for dinner beef-inspired recipes!

Simple breakfast for dinner beef-inspired recipes!

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -There’s something comforting and satisfying about a hot breakfast! Not to mention, eating a protein-rich breakfast keeps you feeling full, longer, which may result in less snacking throughout the day.

Angie Horkan with Wisconsin Beef Council has the scoop on beefy recipes for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner.

Ingredients:
  • 1 recipe Mexican-Style Beef Sausage
  • 2 cans (7-1/2 ounces each) refrigerated buttermilk flavored biscuits
  • 1-1/2 cups reduced-fat shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 cup Mexican crema or dairy sour cream
Cooking:

1. Prepare Mexican-Style Beef Sausage. Set aside.
Mexican-Style Beef Sausage: Combine 1 pound Ground Beef, 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar, 1-1/2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves, 1-1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika, 1-1/2 teaspoons chile powder, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chile powder in large bowl, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Heat large nonstick skillet over medium heat until hot. Add sausage mixture; cook 8 to 10 minutes, breaking into 1/2-inch crumbles and stirring occasionally.
Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. Color is not a reliable indicator of ground beef doneness.

2. Preheat oven to 350°F.
Open biscuit cans; cut each biscuit into quarters. Place biscuits into large bowl. Add sausage mixture, cheese, onion and oil; gently toss until well combined.

3. Generously coat Bundt pan with cooking spray. Place sausage and biscuit mixture in prepared pan. Bake in 350°F oven 30 to 35 minutes until top is golden brown and biscuits are set. Remove from oven; immediately invert onto serving plate. Let rest for 10 minutes. Drizzle with crema, as desired.

Ingredients:
  • 1 pound Ground Beef (93{d2b09b03d44633acb673e8080360919f91e60962656af8ade0305d5d8b7e4889} lean or leaner)
  • 4 small red-skinned new potatoes (about 6 ounces), cut into 6 wedges each
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup thinly sliced yellow onion
  • 1 small zucchini, cut lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/4-inch thick slices
  • 1 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper, divided
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 3 tablespoons shredded Italian cheese blend
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomato
Cooking:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Combine potatoes and water in 10-inch nonstick ovenproof skillet; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 8 to 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender. Remove from skillet; keep warm. Pour off remaining water from skillet, if necessary.

2. Brown Ground Beef with onion in same skillet over medium heat 6 minutes, breaking beef up into 3/4-inch crumbles. Add zucchini. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until zucchini is just tender. Pour off drippings. Return potatoes to skillet. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper; mix thoroughly.
Cook’s Tip: Cooking times are for fresh or thoroughly thawed Ground Beef. Ground Beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160ºF. Color is not a reliable indicator of Ground Beef doneness.

3. Whisk eggs, basil and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in large bowl. Pour evenly over beef mixture. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake in 350°F oven about 18 to 20 minutes or until eggs are set.

4. Sprinkle frittata with tomato. Cut into 4 to 6 wedges.

Why ‘Water Recipes’ Are Taking Over TikTok

Why ‘Water Recipes’ Are Taking Over TikTok

On Shelby Hobbs’ dresser sits a Lazy Susan filled every flavor of liquid syrup you can imagine, from raspberry to peach Bellini. Beside the syrups is a container packed to the brim with water flavoring packets including Strawberry Nerds and Crush Orange.

Next to the supplies is an empty space for Hobbs’ water bottle. So, whenever she’s thirsty, all she has to do is grab her cup, dump in her flavoring of choice and fill up the bottle with ice and water.

Hobbs’ inspiration for her “Hydration Station” came from WaterTok, a new trend on TikTok whose hashtag has garnered over 100 million views. Across the app, creators are sharing themselves adding liquid and powdered flavorings to their water with the shared goal of drinking more water.

“I’ve been drinking this for about a month now,” the 21-year-old tells TODAY.com. “It definitely helps that everyone else on TikTok is making them, so it helps me think of new flavor ideas. But honestly, I haven’t made a bad one yet. I can mix whatever I want, and it still tastes good.”

But while WaterTok might be helping people like Hobbs stay hydrated, some people are questioning just how healthy the trend really is, as these flavorings can contain large amounts of sugar or artificial sweeteners, and it could be just another diet culture fad masquerading as a hydration aid.

TODAY.com talked to creators and experts to unpack everything you need to know about WaterTok (aka HydrationTok). Here’s what they said.

Breaking down #WaterTok

Many people participating in the trend say WaterTok is putting the fun back into drinking water. This community of hydration enthusiasts shares “water recipes” with various flavoring packets and liquids to create the optimal water-drinking experience.

Haley Staggs, 21, tells TODAY.com that WaterTok has helped her stay hydrated throughout the day.

Staggs first discovered the trend from a TikToker named Tonya, who goes by @takingmylifebackat42 on the app and has “recipes” for piña colada water, Starbucks Pink Drink water, bubble gum water and more, and shares her weight-loss journey.

“Watching her videos, I thought, ‘I should try that,'” Staggs says. “I went and got the packets and different water flavors and just started making waters. Now I drink over 100 ounces of water a day.”

And she’s not alone. Jaycie Adamson, 24, also stumbled upon the trend on TikTok — and hasn’t looked back since.

Adamson had never been a big water drinker, she tells TODAY.com. When she saw the trend, she thought, “Hm, this could help me drink water but not have to add sugar or calories.” (Many of the popular flavorings are sugar- and calorie-free.) She drove 30 minutes to the closest Dollar General and bought flavoring packets to put in her Stanley tumbler.

“I’m usually so bad at drinking water but this has been so nice to just fill it up at my own house and make water flavor combination I want for the day,” she says. “Honestly, I haven’t made any that taste bad. They all taste wonderful.”

The best “recipe” she’s found so far is a combo of the Pink Starburst and Pink Nerds powdered drink mixes.

Through posting her own WaterTok videos, she says she’s also found a community. People will comment on her TikToks asking her to share more of her favorite flavor combinations.

“I can tell when a trend’s taken over and it definitely feels like that’s happening,” she says. “When a lot of people on Amazon start buying something, the price will change. I bought the cotton candy syrup on Amazon for $10 and now on Amazon it’s over $20.

For Hobbs, WaterTok has helped her cut back on sugary drinks. She would turn to drinks like loaded tea over plain water.

“I don’t even realize how much (water) I’m drinking now. And I feel so much better,” she says. “I haven’t had much caffeine since I’ve started drinking water because I think it just gives me like natural caffeine and just makes me feel better.”

A registered dietitian’s take on #WaterTok

Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, tells TODAY.com that, in general, anything that helps people drink more water is a positive thing — but there are a few caveats to that.

She loves that people are taking their hydration to the next level with this trend. But her No. 1 piece of advice is to stay away from artificially flavored and colored syrups.

“Since these TikToks feature sugar-free syrups, the influencers don’t seem to be adding sugar to their water,” she says. “However, I do think that making your water super sweet isn’t great in the long run as it may put you in the mindset that all beverages need to be overly sweet and flavored to be enjoyed.”

The first thing that Largeman-Roth thought of when she heard about WaterTok, she says, is Crystal Light.

She says that she remembers how popular it was in the ‘80s and ‘90s for moms looking to lose weight to add Pink Lemonade Crytal Light packets to their water — which is why this trend may reek of toxic diet culture.

“I feel like #WaterTok might be the 2023 answer to Crystal Light with people trying to have a pleasurable flavor experience without any calories or carbs (or very few),” she says.

“I think it’s gaining in popularity because lots of people know they should be drinking more water and fewer sweetened drinks like soda, but plain water feels boring to them.

“Plus, it’s a fun thing to make and drink! We went through a coffee phase and a mocktail phase, so it makes sense that as we head toward the summer, we’ll be going through a water phase.”

But while drinking water is important, so is monitoring the amount you consume.

Largeman-Roth says when you drink more water than your kidneys can process, it can lead to hyponatremia, or low sodium levels.

“Sodium is a mineral that is important for the functioning of our heart, so it needs to stay in balance,” she explains. “When we flood our systems with excessive amounts of water, low sodium levels can lead to low heart rate, confusion, drowsiness and headaches.”

The U.S. National Academy of Medicine suggests an adequate intake of daily fluids of about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) for women.

Largeman-Roth also warns that if an individual is dealing with disordered eating, they may lean in too drastically to this trend, using excessive water-drinking as a weight-loss tool to trick themselves into thinking they’re not hungry. Instead of allowing themselves to enjoy a banana split now and then, they’ll turn to “banana split water.”

“People definitely use coffee as a replacement for breakfast. Coffee is a beverage, not a meal. The same is true for flavored waters,” she says.

At the end of the day, Largeman-Roth will always encourage people to just drink plain water when they’re looking to hydrate. But, she says, adding ice — either plain or cubes of frozen lemon or watermelon juice — definitely helps to perk it up.

“Or go the au naturel route and make (water) with fresh fruit and herbs,” she says. “And if you’re working out a lot or just sweat a ton, adding a flavored hydration mix can be helpful in staying hydrated.”

Why Flavored Water Recipes Are Trending on TikTok

Why Flavored Water Recipes Are Trending on TikTok

If you spend any amount of time on TikTok, you have almost assuredly been lured by the algorithm into a particularly weird niche of beverage videos in recent days. You’ve likely seen a woman, probably a thin woman, smiling as she fills her giant Stanley tumbler with crushed ice and purified water. That all seems perfectly normal, but then the woman pulls out an arsenal of syrups, powders, and liquid flavor enhancers that transform her boring glass of H2O into “birthday cake water” or “peach ring water.” Welcome to #watertok.

In this hydration-obsessed corner of TikTok, where videos hashtagged with #watertok have been viewed more than 84 million times, creators present a slew of “recipes” for spicing up water, that beverage we all need to survive. A particularly prolific creator in the trend is a woman named Tonya, who uses the handle @takingmylifebackat42. Since 2022, she’s racked up millions of views on videos in which she makes a wide range of low-calorie foods, but her water recipes are especially popular. She has recipes for bubblegum water, banana split water, unicorn cotton candy water and, of course, she has an affiliate code where you can purchase syrups to make your own flavored waters (and help her make a little bit of cash).

The people who post #watertok videos receive tons of comments, and some of these dismissively insist that what these creators are making is actually juice, or glorified Kool-Aid, or soda. But while I can’t really get worked up about whether or not these gross-sounding beverages can be reasonably called water, what’s actually upsetting is that #watertok is yet another diet culture fad that has gone mainstream via social media.

The recipes for lemon cake water and strawberry Starburst water didn’t spring fully formed out of the ether. The key thing that most of these water additives, which include sugar-free flavor packets made by brands like Hawaiian Punch and Crystal Light, have in common is that they’re made with artificial sweeteners, and thus, have zero or very few calories. Drinks like these have long been popular in the bariatric surgery community, where people who have undergone surgery are restricted to extremely low calorie diets.

In this context, it’s easy to see why something that tastes like a dessert but doesn’t have any calories has mainstream appeal right now, considering how many people, celebrities and regular folks alike, are taking semaglutide drugs originally intended to treat diabetes to lose weight. If thin is back in, as many cultural experts have observed in recent months, then so are the modern versions of Snackwell’s diet desserts. There is also likely some connection to the “loaded tea” phenomenon, where sugar-free drinks originally made with products from the multi-level marketing company Herbalife have achieved popularity on social media and in small towns across the country. But because it’s 2023, when nothing garners more “likes” and eyeballs than a ridiculous recipe, the popularity of #watertok also has a lot to do with creators packing drinks with an over-the-top number of additives solely for the purpose of driving views.

On some level, I get it. I’m a Stanley tumbler girlie, and an unabashed beverage girlie. I am not surprised that TikTok served this content to me, because I can’t get enough of a weird recipe trend. And for people who hate the taste of plain water, and there are many, the idea of getting hydrated while not drinking a beverage you loathe must be pretty enticing. But good grief, unless you have an actual medical need, just throw a slice of lemon in there or something.

The Sims 4: Cooking Recipes Guide

The Sims 4: Cooking Recipes Guide

Cooking is an essential aspect of daily life, and in The Sims 4, it is no exception. Cooking skill is a crucial skill for any Sim looking to whip up a delicious meal. From the base game to the various expansion packs, the game offers a wide range of recipes for players to learn and experiment with. Whether it’s whipping up a quick snack or preparing a gourmet feast, mastering the Cooking Skill will enable players to satisfy their Sim’s hunger, impress guests, and make a profit.

In The Sims 4, Sims can primarily learn new recipes by practicing their Cooking Skill. As they cook more meals, their skill level will increase, and they will unlock new recipes. Aside from leveling up the Cooking Skill, Sims can also unlock new recipes through various means. For example, ordering food from a food vendor or a restaurant can also sometimes result in Sims learning the recipe of the dish they ordered. Additionally, some recipes can be unlocked by Sims that experiencing certain emotional states, such as being energized, flirty, angry and more.

Tips For Cooking Skill

The Sims 4 Tips For Cooking Skill

Cooking is an important skill for Sims to master, as it affects their overall mood and well-being. While Sims can opt for quick snacks or microwave food, relying on these options for too long can give Sims a negative moodlet. The best way to improve the cooking skill is to cook meals to satisfy the hunger need. However, Sims with low-grade appliances or those completing the Unlucky Chef Scenario may find it beneficial to learn cooking from skill books in order to prevent fires. Gourmet Cooking skill requires a minimum of level 5 in cooking, but this can also be learned from skill books.

Sims who enjoy cooking frequently and in larger quantities may want to consider completing the Master Chef aspiration, as it enables them to cook high-quality food that never spoils. For those who enjoy these activities, gardening and fishing are also great skills to develop alongside cooking since fresh, high-quality ingredients improve the overall quality of the food, while using one’s own ingredients reduces the cost of food preparation. By improving their cooking skills, Sims can learn to add flavor to their stove-cooked meals, and by reaching level 8 in the Gourmet Cooking skill, they can learn how to garnish their dishes. These techniques not only enhance the overall quality of the meal but also give unique moodlets to the Sims who eat it.

All Skill-Based Cooking Recipes

The Sims 4 All Skill-Based Cooking Recipes

These recipes are easily accessible through the fridge or oven as players improve their cooking skill, without requiring additional unique interactions with objects or other Sims. The base game provides a substantial collection of cooking recipes, but various expansion packs offer an extensive range of options, catering to Sims’ unique tastes and lifestyles.

Regardless of the pack or base game, many of the recipes in The Sims 4 can be cooked with fresh ingredients. However, the Cottage Living expansion pack introduced a new lot challenge called Simple Living, which adds another layer of realism and challenge to cooking. With this trait, Sims cannot rely on their Simoleons to purchase ingredients via the cooking appliance right away, and must instead do their own grocery shopping or grow and harvest all the required produce themselves. This can make cooking a bit more challenging, but also more rewarding for players who enjoy a more immersive gameplay experience.

Gourmet cooking may appear similar to normal cooking in many ways, but it offers more exciting options for Sims to explore. It also includes items such as Ambrosia, which can revive dead Sims. Gourmet cooking recipes are also compatible with simple cooking. However, unlike normal cooking recipes, they do not require varying types or amounts of ingredients for different serving sizes.

Vendor Recipes

The Sims 4 Vendor Recipes

To learn new vendor recipes in The Sims 4, Sims must visit vendor stalls and try out new food. While the City Living expansion pack introduced the first set of vendor recipes, other packs also include some vendor recipes. The requirements per pack for these recipes are as follows:

Related: The Sims 4: City Living Complete Guide

  • City Living: Sims must visit each festival and food stall and eat the food to unlock the recipe. This pack is compatible with the Simple Living lot trait.
  • Cats & Dogs: Sims must visit vendor stalls at Brindleton Bay and eat the food to unlock the recipe.
  • Jungle Adventure: Sims must visit the vendor stalls at Selvadorada and eat the food to unlock the recipe. Some recipes require the Selvadoradan Culture Skill at level 5.
  • Journey to Batuu: Food can be purchased from multiple locations in Black Spire Outpost, including Docking Bay 7, Ronto Roasters, and Oga’s Cantina. To learn the recipes, the Sim trying the food must be inspired.

Other Food Interactions And Recipes

The Sims 4 Dine Out Restaurant Ordering Food

Additional food options for Sims can be obtained through certain objects or features in base game or packs. Here are some of them:

  • Cupcake Machine: Requires the Whipped Dream Cupcake Factory object from Build/Buy Mode. With the Get To Work expansion, players can also gain baking skill from this item and unlock more recipes. Most items are compatible with the Simple Living lot challenge.
  • Experimental Dishes: These dishes require the Dine Out game pack and can only be eaten at restaurants. While players can’t learn these recipes to cook at home, taking pictures of experimental dishes serves as a new collection group while enjoying interesting meals.
  • Fire Pit: Comes with the Outdoor Living pack. Most items don’t require any ingredients for normal or simple living, nor simoleons, except for cooking Beetles which need 1 beetle in the inventory.
  • Grand Meals: These dishes are exclusive to the Seasons pack. Their primary function is to be served during holiday celebrations, but they can be cooked anytime. They are also compatible with the Simple Living lot challenge.
  • Off-The-Grid Exclusive Recipes: While many general recipes can be cooked at an off-the-grid lot, some items are only available when this lot challenge is active. Most require fish or certain vegetables, and can also be utilized in combination with the Simple Living lot challenge.
  • Outdoor Grill: These recipes are exclusive to the Outdoor Grill. Most are compatible with the Simple Living lot challenge.
  • Pet Recipes: Requires the Cats & Dogs expansion pack and a pet to be present in the household. There are normal cooking and gourmet cooking pet recipes available.

The Sims 4 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

4 dessert recipes you can try this Ramadan

During Ramadan, it is hard for people with a sweet tooth like me to find room for dessert. Between feeling too bloated after iftar and rushing through sehri, I often have to compromise with my date being the only sweet treat I have during the day. However, during the rare days when my desire for sweets was enough to drive me to the kitchen and prepare something, these recipes have satisfied my cravings.

Date Pudding

Ingredients:

Pudding:

300g pitted dates

1 tsp of baking soda

1 cup of water

1/2 cup of light brown sugar

80g of butter

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla essence

1 and 1/4 cups of flour

1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp of salt

Toffee Sauce:

1/3 cup of unsalted butter

1 cup of heavy cream

3/4 cup of brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp of salt

Instructions

  1. Add the dates, boiling water, and the baking soda to a bowl and let the dates soak for about 10 minutes. Once the dates are softened, use a fork to mash the mixture into a thick paste.
  2. Add the date paste, softened butter, brown sugar, and vanilla essence to a large bowl and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the mixture and fold until a thick batter forms.
  4. Pour the mixture into a parchment paper lined baking tray and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degree celsius for 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out of the centre of the pudding clean.
  5. While the pudding bakes, you can make the toffee sauce. Add the butter, heavy cream, brown sugar, salt and vanilla essence to a pot over medium heat. Bring to a simmer for 3-4 minutes. Once the sauce thickens, take it off the heat and set aside until the pudding is done.
  6. Once the pudding is done, let it rest for 15 minutes. Once cooled, use a straw or a skewer to poke holes into the pudding.
  7. Pour about half of the toffee sauce over the pudding and let it soak in for 30 minutes.
  8. Serve the pudding with an optional scoop of ice cream and more sauce.

3 Ingredient Ice Cream Bread

Ingredients:

6-8 bars of chocolate ice cream

1 and 1/4 cups of flour

1 tsp of baking soda

Instructions:

  1. Melt 2 cups worth of ice cream bars in an oven safe bowl.
  2. Combine the melted ice cream with the flour and baking soda. Fold until a rough dough forms.
  3. You can add additional toppings such as chocolate chunks, nuts, fruits, etc.
  4. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees celsius for 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out of the centre clean.
  5. Let the bread cool for 15 minutes. Slice it up and enjoy!

Banana Date Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 whole banana

5 dates

1 tbsp of yoghurt

1 tsp of honey

1 tsp of cinnamon

Ice cubes

1/2 cup of milk

Instructions:

The amount of each ingredient you use for this smoothie is customisable. The honey can be adjusted to your desired level of sweetness. The amount of milk can also be adjusted to change how thick the smoothie is. This smoothie is surprisingly filling and can even be perfect for suhoor.

Cake and Coffee

Ingredients:

Cake:

12 tbsp of unsalted butter

1 and 1/2 cups of sugar

3 eggs

2 tsp of vanilla essence

1 and 1/4 cups of yoghurt

2 and 1/2 cups of flour

2 tsp of baking powder

2 tsp of baking soda

1 tsp of salt

Cinnamon crumble:

1/3 cups of light brown sugar

2/3 cups of flour

2 and 1/4 tsp of cinnamon

1/4 tsp of salt

4 tbsp of cold unsalted butter

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix together your butter and sugar for at least 5-10 minutes. Once smooth, whisk in all 3 of your eggs. Add your yoghurt and vanilla to the mixture and whisk until completely smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl mix together your dry ingredients.
  3. Gradually add your dry ingredients to the wet batter, a little bit at a time until everything is well incorporated.
  4. For the cinnamon crumble, add the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, butter and salt to a bowl. Use a fork (or your hands if you’re feeling impatient) to mix the ingredients together until a rough crumble forms.
  5. Take a loaf pan and fill it up 1/4 of the way with the cake batter. Put a generous layer of the crumble on the batter and then pour the rest of the batter on top. Top off the batter with the rest of the crumble. Try not to fill up the loaf pan the whole way in order to stop the cake from drying out.
  6. Bake the cake at 160 degrees celsius for about 50-60 minutes. Once the cake is done, allow it to cool and serve it with a warm cup of coffee.
